Have you ever been up late at night and seen those infomercials where they show a cutlery set that can cut through a can like butter? Do you actually need a knife like that in your kitchen? Any cook or any person that cooks for friends and family knows they need a great knife that they can use every day. Most people think that having one knife will cover all their basic needs when it comes to preparing their meal but that just isn’t true. Can you use a butter knife to cut through a thick steak? In order to be properly equipped for all forms of cutting in your kitchen, you need a cutlery set.
All knives are manufactured to use for different types of cutting, paring, carving etc. For example you could not use a paring knife to cut apart a chicken because the blade is too weak.
What Type of Knife do I Need?
Knives are constructed out of different material and different angles for specific tasks. Knives that are manufactured to cut through bread are made specifically just for that purpose. Bread knives are made with specific serrations to cut specifically through bread and bread only. Smaller knives or (Paring Knives) are manufactured to peel fruit or vegetables with ease.
Knives that are manufactured to cut through thick cuts of beef or steak are actually called Steak Knives. Steak knives are designed with a specific angle to make sure they can cut through tough cuts of meat and gristle.
There also is a knife designed for the Deli which is made to assure your knuckles will not touch the counter when cutting. Knives that are specifically designed to debone a fish fillet are called a Fillet knife.
Years before butchers had the privilege to use a band saw to cut large portions of meat through the bone they used Cleavers. Cleavers are designed to be very rigid and you can use them to take larger cuts of meat and literally chop through bone to make smaller cuts of meat.
Have you ever watched someone “Shuck” an oyster? The knife they use is called an oyster knife or grapefruit knife. If you’re interested in making a beautiful decorative type of cut most likely you will want to use a Tourner knife. Last but not least is the all purpose knife used for everything from chopping to slicing usually called the Chef’s Knife it will be the most used knife in your cutlery set.
